Escaping the Boss From Hell: Three Steps to a Better Career

Nearly everyone has suffered this at least once in his career—the boss who makes each workday a living terror. You can find the Boss from Hell in any industry or occupation. Even the best companies slip up from time to time, allowing bullies to rise through the employment food chain to management.

If a national survey were taken to find out the reasons people change jobs, by far the number one reason for job dissatisfaction would be bad management. As a career coach, surprisingly, I’ve found that increased earning potential usually ranks far below the desire to leave a mean, unreasonable boss. If you wake up each day dreading the next eight to ten hours, your problem might be your supervisor.

You’re working for the Boss From Hell if:

He (or she) bullies you and your coworkers with threats and temper tantrums.

His unpredictable moods keeps the office environment constantly tense and second-guessing his next move.

He sets unrealistic and unattainable goals.

You live in constant fear of being fired.

Fear and intimidation never motivate employees to excel. Tyrannical supervisors create an atmosphere of distrust and isolation. If you work for someone like this, your confidence is probably not what it used to be. In fact, you are probably second-guessing your decisions on the job constantly. As long as you work for management that rules by fear, you’ll never reach your career and earning potential.

There are three steps to escape the Boss From Hell and move on to a happier, healthier work place.

Gain perspective to think rationally about your career options.

Fear in the workplace tends to leave people thinking they have no better options than to stick it out. Such thinking is a result of loss of confidence and the inability to see beyond the present distress. One way to gain perspective and see new options is to spend some time browsing job postings. The right direction might be within another department or division of your current employer, but away from your current boss. Or it might be somewhere else altogether. If you keep an open mind, you’ll see that there are many options for you outside of your current job.

One way to get the most out of this career reconnaissance is to search for job postings based on skills rather than job titles. Do a job-skills self-analysis to identify the tasks and activities you enjoy performing on your job. Use those skills as your search terms at online job boards. You may be surprised to see that you qualify for positions you had not thought of before.

2. Take inventory of your career accomplishments and contributions.

In order to get moving toward a new position you’ll need to regain your confidence. Think about, and then write down, situations of where you:

Came up with an idea for saving time

Helped your team reach a production goal

Identified cost savings opportunities

Solved a customer problem leading to increased customer satisfaction

As you think back on your accomplishments, you’ll begin to realize the value you have added to your company. Remember, other employers have similar problems to solve. They are looking for candidates who have experience in handling difficult situations. The more specific the examples of your accomplishments are, the more marketable you will be in the job market.

3. Update your resume.

Once you have your accomplishments listed, use them to update your resume. Think of your resume as your initial marketing tool; it should announce to potential employers your ability to help them reach their bottom-line corporate goals. For example, your resume should appeal to potential employers’ desire to increase efficiency, cut costs and improve productivity. When employers see what you can do for them, they’re sure to be impressed.

Your resume should also have a clear career focus. Updating your resume doesn’t mean simply adding your current work history to your old resume format. Without a careful resume strategy, your resume will begin to resemble an old house with too many tacked on additions. Make sure your resume presents a cohesive, well-thought out, professional front.

Additionally, if your career has taken several interesting turns, you’ll want to adjust your resume toward your current focus. Take the time to refocus your resume on your current job search. Highlight the items from your career that are relevant, and minimize the things that are no longer relevant.

Once you have invested the time to gain perspective on your career options, take inventory of your accomplishments, and update your resume, you’ll be mentally and emotionally ready to seek other employment opportunities, either within or outside your current company. You don’t have to remain in an unhappy job. You do have choices. Take the steps to help yourself—you’ll be glad you did!

The Mentality: Run Your Career as a Business

On a camping trip in the Rocky Mountains “many years ago”, ETP Network Editor-in-Chief Chip Hartman had the misfortune of stepping into a pool of quicksand along the banks of a slow-moving river. I’ll let Chip tell the story:

“We broke camp around 7 am and headed toward the river. The embankment was so steep we had to run down the path to reach the water’s edge. We thought we were running out onto a wide sandy area along the river bank, but it wasn’t. With the very first step, three of us sank into the muck at least six inches. Every time we tried to remove one leg, the other would sink deeper. In less than a minute, we were almost waist-deep. Then we remembered the advice of a forest ranger only a few days earlier: “If you step into quicksand, you can escape by either lying backward or forward on it. It’s denser than water so you can actually float higher in it than water as long as you’re calm and don’t make any sudden thrashing movements. You can float your way out of it.” But how could we do something so preposterous and illogical? There was no time for debate. We either had to float our way out or risk a horrible death. One by one we tried, very gently. Little by little we paddled out with our arms and reached an area were there was secure footing underneath.”

Pretty frightening, isn’t it? But Chip’s quicksand story provides an interesting insight into paradigms. Many of us were brought up to believe the Hollywood stereotype of quicksand victims thrashing upright in the muck, yelling and screaming as they sank deeper and deeper, gasping for that final breath before slipping under the surface. It was a grim, terrifying way to die — and we all bought it!

Which proves how easy it is to cling to long-held beliefs, especially if they go unchallenged for a long time. And that makes me wonder: How many other beliefs do we hold as absolutes, absolutes that could be easily debunked if a better explanation came along? In Chip's case, the need to quickly change long-held beliefs may have saved his life. What could it do for you?

I’m going to ask you to let go of the belief that so many professionals cling to — “The Employee Mind-Set” if I work hard I will secure my position and everything else will take care of itself — and adopt an entirely new way of thinking about career management.

Let’s get to work.

As the CEO of your career you will:

Learn to partition your responsibilities to ensure that all critical operations are carried out and none get overlooked. For example, your Research & Development Department will be in charge of networking — making connections, digging up new leads, gathering business information, etc… Right from the start, anything you do that's part of this effort is processed in the R & D “department” of your mind. Likewise, your Sales & Marketing Department will oversee the development of a powerful value proposition until every task is properly niched.

Take responsibility for making tough decisions — there’s just no way around this. Tough decision-making is a skill with tremendous short and long-term benefits. It trains your mind to weigh options before you commit to a course of action.

Accept the consequences of your tough decisions — both good and bad. You can savor the good results and analyze why the bad results occurred. Most importantly, don’t waste time beating yourself up when a decision yields poor results. Pick up the pieces and move on. Learn from every aspect of the failure experience because it will move you closer to career success.

Bring a new level of personal accountability to your career. Why? Because you have a “governing body” to which you now have ultimate responsibility: your Personal Board of Directors (e.g., spouse, family, extended family, significant other, etc…).

Still not convinced you can benefit from thinking like a CEO? Are you saying, "Why bother? This sounds like a whole lot of work for very little benefit."

If that’s how you see it, consider this: Your competition fails to adopt the “I’m in charge” attitude and their race for the finish line becomes a mediocre performance at best. They remain mired in the “employee mind-set”, a part of the Black Hole crowd that inevitably lags behind. And while most of us don't want others to fail, there’s nothing wrong with capitalizing on the inept business decisions of others to gain a tactical advantage whenever possible. In other words, if you are thinking like a business owner and your competitors aren’t, you have a significant edge over them. Do not fail to leverage it!

Will you absorb this paradigm shift overnight? No. In a week? Unlikely. In a month? Maybe. People internalize it at very different rates. Most can tell rather quickly if they are cut out to be the CEO of ME, Inc.

The good news is that this mental model will work if you make it work.

Your Job Search Toolkit -- A Resume Template and User's Guide

I am an executive recruiter . . . a retained recruiter . . . meaning that companies partner with me to identify and secure talent for key positions within their organizations. My expertise is search within the Communications and Marketing disciplines. Prior to executive search, I spent my career rising through the ranks of various Communications and Marketing roles; this is what I know and it was a very natural segue for me.

My approach to search is very comprehensive. While my priorities are obviously with my clients, I believe in really getting to know candidates for two reasons. First, a deep conversation allows me to assess not only the "technical" fit of the candidate for the hiring organization -- the "can this person do the job" fit -- but it also allows me to measure whether this candidate's own career trajectory is aligned with where my Client sees the role going. I also have the ability to determine whether this person will be the right "fit" for the organization; culture fit can be as, if not more, important than "technical." Second, I enjoy getting to know the broader circle of candidates because I know that if you, Candidate, are not right for a current search, you may be for the next one.

All of these conversations start with resumes . . . my first glimpse into a candidate's professional story. With the process of getting to know you, can come the familiarity that is usually preceded by, "can I say something to you without hurting your feelings?" It's the way you feel when you know you should point out to your beloved uncle that his shirt and tie are so mismatched that to let him go out in public would be devastating. I feel that way about candidates and their resumes, at times. More often than not, I have to tell a candidate that he or she is simply not right for the search. Many of those times have been followed by a "may I make a comment about your resume?" And then I'll share what didn't work for me. Sometimes, it's as simple as a misspelled word or a spacing issue; but frequently, there's something else . . . something that goes deeper than a technical misstep. It's more about the fact that what you've told me, Candidate, is not what your resume is saying. There's a disconnect.

Because reading resumes occupies so much of my time, it is inevitable that certain styles will stand out more than others -- for good or for bad. As I mentioned in "Is Your Resume Guilty of Horror Vacuii," a preferred style started emerging after an exercise where I spread dozens of resumes across a table. I then started pulling out the resumes that caught my eye because they were attractive . . . they stood out because they were inviting. I would then focus on content; it was a case of form over function, at the outset.

When delicately broaching the subject with candidates, I found myself making small suggestions . . . hints about how a few changes to his/her resume could provide a more accurate reflection of who they are as a candidate. In some cases, I rewrote sections . . . in a few instances, I've completely overhauled resumes. The suggestions, though, were always consistent with what I saw in the "survivor" resumes from the Great Table Experiment of '09. Because resume writing is not a service I provide, and the process is so time-consuming, I started pulling those sections together and forming a template that could help those who wanted it. I shared the finished product with several members of the Plan B community who were actively seeking new positions. I wanted to take the template for a test drive and am happy to say that those candidates received very positive feedback about their new resumes.

As I was getting ready to release the template to a broader group, I thought it would be appropriate to provide an accompanying explanation of why I was recommending certain styles or approaches. I soon realized that this would be no small feat . . . that a few paragraphs would not do. Thus, the User's Guide, which contains about 80 pages of resume guidance from my perspective, was born. As I mention, you can ask 100 recruiters or resume writers or career coaches their opinions and get 100 different answers. These are mine based on what resonates best with me.

Roberto (Bob) Llamas is Chief Human Resources and Public Affairs Officer for The Nielsen Company. Career Management Seminar

On October 2nd, the New York Chapter of the National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) presented its annual Career Management Conference, formerly called the Pre-Conference. The Pre-Conference or Career Management Conference is a prelude event to NSHMBAs National Conference & Career Expo, which is being held now in Chicago until October 23, 2010.

This year’s Career Management Conference was held at Fordham University, for the second year in a row. Fordham University and the Black and Hispanic MBA Association of Fordham University co-presented this year’s event. This conference aims to provide professionals and students with the necessary tools to tackle the job market with seminars ranging from developing your personal brand and creating your elevator pitch, to how to create the perfect resume. In addition, the event provided the 130 participants with personal coaches to help them with their interviewing skills during the mock interview workshop. New York Chapter Corporate Partners were also invited to participate in the mini career expo, which took place at the Atrium of Fordham University in the Lincoln Center Square.

In addition to the workshops, all of which were taught and presented by volunteer Professionals, there were panel discussions on how to create your personal career path and also on how to navigate the National expo, which consists of about 300 companies eager to hire top Latino talent and about 8,000 talented individuals looking to work for companies who appreciate diversity. Overall, the event was a huge success and New York NSHMBA has an open invitation to return to Fordham University for next year’s conference.

Towards the end of the day, Tatiana Hansell, Senior Brand Marketing-Multicultural, Unilever North America, presented the keynote speech. Ms. Hansell spoke about the issues facing the ever changing multicultural market, as well as the qualifications needed to work for a company like Unilever and even better, what she looks for in the potential employees. This gave the 130 participants and inside view on the mind of a leader, as well as what her organization looks for when hiring new talent.

This day was topped off by the raffling of 3 scholarships of $250 each to attend the National Conference in Chicago. The 3 lucky winners are able to use this money towards their expenses, including hotel, airfare and/or conference registration. We will highlight our winners in a future blog.

How Do Students and Professionals Afford Their MBAs? The National Society of Hispanic MBAs’ Scholarship Program

Since its creation in 1989, NSHMBA’s Scholarship Program has given millions to talented, motivated Hispanics

Dallas, TX (March 10, 2010) ¬– This year marks the organization’s twenty-first year of its Scholarship Program and its support of Hispanics and their educational goals of pursuing and earning their Masters in Business Administration or equivalent degree. The National Society of Hispanic MBA’s Scholarship Program is responsible for ensuring qualified Hispanic graduate students are not burdened by the financial strains of continuing their educations.

The 2010 application period opens March 10 and will end April 30, and financial awards will range from $2,500–$10,000. The awards are a combination of scholarship funds and a $250 travel reimbursements for attending the NSHMBA Annual Conference & Career Expo, with the $10,000 scholarships given to the top five (5) full-time applicants who demonstrate financial need.

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic achievement, work experience, financial need, personal statements of goals and aspirations, community service, letters of recommendation, and NSHMBA ambassadorship.

“The last year or two has been very challenging for professionals, but one great thing that has come from the challenge is it has given people the power to really evaluate their career roles and then adjust for the better,” said Steve Ramos, NSHMBA Interim CEO. “What make these ideas a reality are things like the NSHMBA Scholarship Program. With it, people embark on their educational journey with nothing but confidence and support that they will succeed.”

People will remember 2009 for many reasons. For the New York Chapter of the National Society of Hispanic MBAs and for Black and Hispanic MBA alumni associations from New York University and Fordham University, 2009 marks the birth of the Alliance Development Committee, which was created to empower our communities.

To fulfill its purpose, the Alliance Development Committee is launching two exciting and important initiatives in 2010: the SAT Test Prep Scholarships (“STEPS”) for high school juniors attending New York City public schools and an MBA Mentoring program for recent graduates. Both ventures share one goal: empowerment of our communities from high school to postgraduate education and beyond.

Alliance’s Purpose

• Create substantive activities – well beyond social interaction – in which MBA alumni of color can engage
• Develop a pipeline of committed alumni dedicated to creating and maintaining connections between more recent and less recent graduates
• Give back to our communities in New York City and its surrounding areas

Alliance’s Objectives

The Alliance’s planned programs have two primary objectives:
• Better prepare our youth for college admission
• Mentor professionals once they are ensconced in the work force

The first objective is addressed through the newly created SAT Test Prep Scholarship (“STEPS”) program. The Wall Street Journal reports that average SAT test scores for African Americans and Hispanics fell across the board in 2009. The Alliance’s delivery partners for this initiative are Learning Leaders, a New York City-based non-profit organization that has trained volunteers to provide individualized instructional and other school-based support for our public school students and their parents for over fifty years and Revolution Prep, a test preparation service founded in 2002, which provides school-based SAT test prep services throughout New York City.

The MBA Mentoring Program is the group’s solution to the second objective, coupling requests for advanced professional development with meaningful community involvement in order to create a structured, cohesive and beneficial enterprise. The MBA Mentoring Program is the first leadership development and mentoring program of its kind available through the three MBA organizations. It pairs select recent and less recent African American and Hispanic MBA graduates from NYU and Fordham Universities and members of the National Society of Hispanic MBAs’ New York chapter.

Currently, NSHMBA is going through a transitional period in our membership database. We are asking you to please wait and renew your membership after this transition. All current membership with a June 30, 2009 expiration date will be extended through mid-July and the 30-day "grace period" begin at that time through mid-August.

U.S. Colleges Say Illegal Immigrants Should Be Eligible for More Financial Assistance

U.S. colleges are breaking their silence on immigration, urging Congress to allow students who are illegal immigrants to apply for financial aid and qualify for in-state tuition, the Associated Press reports.

In a report released Tuesday, the U.S. College Board, which is best known for heading up the SAT program but also consists of 5,000 colleges, is also asking that Congress provide illegal immigrants a path to citizenship.

The report marks the first time the College Board has officially weighed in on the thorny issue, and came in response to how some states are taking steps to bar illegal immigrants from paying in-state tuition.

Illegal immigrants are entitled to attend American public K-12 schools. But in many states, those who go on to achieve high marks do not qualify for paying in-state tuition, even if they are class presidents and valedictorians.

Since 2006, four states -- Georgia, Oklahoma, Colorado and Arizona -- have made illegal immigrants ineligible for in-state tuition, according to the Christian Science Monitor. South Carolina went one step further, barring illegal immigrants from enrolling in its public colleges altogether. North Carolina has done the same at its community colleges.

However, at least 10 states this decade have passed legislation making illegal immigrants eligible for in-state tuition. One of the states, California, is currently considering a bill that would also make them eligible for financial aid.

The House and Senate are considering bills that would grant illegal immigrants who came to this country when they were 15 or younger and have lived here at least five years the ability to obtain conditional legal status after graduating high school, according to A.P. This is an invaluable experience in the world of scientific research, with hands-on exposure to scientific & engineering practices not available in the HS environment; It is a paid apprenticeship ($2,000) and the students are assigned a scientist or engineer as their mentor. The National Center for Health Marketing's Global Health Odyssey Museum is pleased to offer the 2009 CDC Disease Detective Camp (DDC). NSHMBA supports Hispanic MBA candidates preparing for future leadership

Dallas, TX (February 11, 2009) – The National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) Scholarship Program is how talented and bright Hispanics can afford an MBA. The 2009 application period opened February 01 and will end April 30. The awards given include scholarships of $5,000-$10,000 for full-time graduate students and $2,500 for those pursuing their degree through part-time study.

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic achievement, work experience, financial need, personal statements of goals and aspirations, community service, letters of recommendation, and NSHMBA ambassadorship.

“For the past 20 years, the National Society of Hispanic MBAs has been instrumental in helping Hispanics continue their education and actively pursue masters’ of business administration degrees,” said Lourdes M. Hassler, NSHMBA CEO. “These students will have a profound effect on the future landscape of business schools and corporations as we see them graduate and move on to promising careers.”

This project sprang from discussions held in the Advanced Placement Literature and Composition class during the reading of F. Scott Fitzgeralds novel The Great Gatsby, says Mr. Steinman, AP Lit. teacher at Village Academy High School (Pomona Unified School District). The students opened up, shared deeply touching details of their current travails, and felt compelled to share their sentiments with those who were in a position to not only listen to them, but implement policies in order to make things better for them and the country they love dearly.

The sentiments expressed in this project are true, heartfelt and totally unscripted. Students sat themselves down, the camera began to roll, and the resulting footage is as true as it gets. Spoken with innocence, directly, and with the courage rarely seen by teenagers today, the video was totally edited by students and is meant as a means of expression by which positive action will hopefully be inspired to evolve.

FIVE TIPS ON HOW TO WIN A SCHOLARSHIP

Step One: Be Proactive
Review scholarship applications and requirements and apply only to those in which you meet the requirements. Develop a time line on each scholarship and make notes on what items will be needed for each application. Search for as many scholarship resources as possible. Resources may include local non-profile community organizations, employers and college campuses.

Step Two: Be Organized
Request several sealed transcripts and make several copies of your resume and recommendation letters. Make sure all documents are clean and easy to read.

Step Three: Be Prepared
Complete all required steps in the application process including completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. In order to complete this FAFSA you’ll need your social security number, most recent year’s tax forms, or end of year pay stubs, W-2 forms and records of the recent year’s untaxed income, such as child support or Social Services, Social Security and the Veterans Administration.

Step Four: Be Careful
Realizing the potential of possible scams, avoid using scholarship/financial search organizations that make guarantees of receiving a scholarship. There is no such thing as a guaranteed scholarship. Don’t procrastinate: Meet all application deadlines and make sure you complete all required steps. Most scholarship organizations attribute incomplete applications as the primary reason why students do not meet eligibility requirements.

Step Five: Be Positive and Patient
Once you carefully read eligibility criteria and complete all the necessary paperwork and submit items requested, your chances of winning a scholarship are greater than those who never even apply. Remain positive and await a response.

Work experience: I am currently an Assistant Vice President and Regional Financial Controller of a number of Shared Services Product Lines within the CFO Risk Management Division at Credit Suisse. I joined Credit Suisse in 2007 after serving three years at JPMorgan Chase & Co., in both Business and Financial Analytics. Prior to joining JPMorgan, I spent 3 years as a Trade Specialist at Natexis Bleichroeder Inc. where I successfully completed his Series 7, 63 and 55 licensing certifications.

How and when did you join NSHMBA?

I joined NSHMBA in 2005 while studying towards my MBA but joined the NY Chapter board in late 2006.

Are you a member of other similar organizations?

I am also a member of Credit Suisse's Multicultural Resource Network, The Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA), Junior Achievement New York, Prep for Prep mentor, the Alumni Advisory Committee for Fordham University's World Wise Network and Alumni Advisor for the Fordham Black and Hispanic MBA Association, where I also serve as a mentor to current MBA candidates.

How, when and why did you become the EVP?

To be honest, I had no intention of running for EVP in 2006. I'll never forget my first NSHMBA town hall. On a cold winter evening at the New York Times, I declared my candidacy for the role of VP of Communication. Like many who look join NSHMBA boards, I was hoping to contribute in any way I could while developing the experience and leadership skills necessary to one day become Chapter EVP or President. Little did I know at the time that it was in my reluctance to assume a position of leadership that I would find my own voice and the confidence in myself to do for others as I could not then do for myself. Luckily, I lost that election but must have made an impression on the chapter leadership and was asked to consider another position on the board. After further developing my platform completing a round of interviews, I was asked to serve as chapter EVP and have never looked back.

Have you or are you currently part of other boards? If so, which position(s) do you hold?

NSHMBA is a full time committment but I have been blessed with an opportunity to return to my alma mater and serve on two alumni advisory boards. It has been my honor to give back to the school that taught me the meaning of hard work, friendship and community development. 9 hours of class a week while working 60 hour workweeks, taking vacation time to study for midterms and finals, locking myself away in a quiet room to study for hours at a time and always walking around with a text book in my hand, taught me not only what sleep deprivation could do to a person but what one person could do if only someone, somewhere, granted them an opportunity to better themselves.

What are some positive aspects of being the EVP?

Serving as EVP has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. NSHMBA has bestowed upon me a great responsibility; to see to the personal and professional development of our members by fostering hispanic leadership in our communities. We do so at NSHMBA by developing and managing community empowerment programs, grass roots initiatives, partnerships with external diversity and affinity organizations, career workshops, seminars and networking events. During my term at EVP, I have sought to develop comprehensive programs and initiatives that have allowed NSHMBA members unprecedented access to community development boards, mentorship programs for high school youths and help build of homes for needy families in low income areas to name a few. I have also sought to open doors for new sponsorships, partnerships and relationships throughout NSHMBA and I am forever grateful to NSHMBA for allowing granting me an opportunity to serve the needs of Hispanics in new and exciting ways.

What about some negatives?

I've often been asked if there were 6 of me running around. With all of the non-profit work that I do, I'm often invited to events, dinners, luncheons and information sessions. I find myself pulled in any number of directions at once. But I have learned to do what I can, when I can and with my full commitment. I never go half way and never compromise my effort. Unfortunately, that leads to long nights at events, late night conference calls, countless emails per day and early mornings in the office. But, it's all worth it in the end. I'm doing what I love to do.

What's a typical day for the EVP?

The short version, 7:30-8:00am in the office for an international conference call, answer any number of NSHMBA emails, review resume's for mentees or NSHMBA members, write a letter of recommendation, send emails and make calls to sponsors and partners looking to access this pool of Hispanic talent to which I am the steward, manage the daily operation of the NY Chapter Board ensuring that we're executing against the NSHMBA mission and vision, check in with a mentor, put out fires at work, attend an event, network into the night and with any luck, study for the CFA on the train ride home, arrive by 10:00pm for dinner, spend quality time with my wife, and then do it all over again the next day.

Can you share any funny, moving or upsetting anecdotes that you have encountered as EVP?

To be EVP for NSHMBA is to have a real time view of the problems we face both socially and economically. By the very nature of the tumultuous economic environment we're living in today and the nature of the organization we have volunteered to serve, I have personally witnessed the unprecedented downsizing of Corporate America. It has saddened me to see a job market saturated with highly qualified, intelligent and capable talent with no other recourse than to seek unemployment. So much was made this election of the "greed" on Wall Street, crushing the economy of Main Street. And while yes, systematic fraud, inadequate regulation and risky practices have led this economy into a downward spiral, what of the financial analysts, interns and first year MBA's who usually make up the first round of layoffs? What of the experienced professionals that have to change careers or relocate their families in search of opportunities elsewhere? To be a leader in a market such as this, is to empathize with your members and want for them as you would for yourself. If you can't, then this role is not the one for you.

What have you learned about being a leader during this process?
I truly believe that those who aspire to gain power or influence could never be as successful as those individuals who are thrust into positions of leadership. Many of us just wanted to "pitch in" and "help where we could" when we joined NSHMBA, but the world has asked us to be more than we thought we could be and do more than we ever thought could be done. A leader wants to be more, a leader innovates, looks beyond a mandate to serve the greater purpose and does so because it needs to be done. I'll never forget how embarrassed I was as I served on a panel of "Latino Visionaries", sponsored by JPMorgan Chase. In no way have I ever thought of myself as a visionary (I lobbied to have the name changed). I'm simply a person who acknowledges that our world is flawed and does what can to fix it.

How and when did you join NSHMBA?

I spend much too many years not giving back to my culture what I have learned through the years. Through the encouragement of a very close friend I began looking for an organization whose mission mirrored my feelings and that would provide me the opportunity to give back. NSHMBA fit the bill. In 2000 I sought out the New York Chapter President and told him that I wanted to get involved and he put me to work right away.

Are you a member of other similar organizations?

I belong to other non-cultural organizations; the only other ethnic based organization that I belong to is NAMIC.

How, when and why did you become the President?

In 2004 I was asked to run for the chapter President but due to business complications and personal obligations I chose not to run. Prior to 2004 I had been the VP of Operations and EVP. In 2006 the President’s position was open and I decide it was my time and nominated myself for the post and the rest is history.

Have you or are you currently part of other boards? If so, which position(s) do you hold?

Yes, I hold board positions for a few other non for Profit organizations and the Executive Director of a National organization.

What are some positive aspects of being the President?

There are truly many positive aspects being the President; you get a chance to help others who look to you for opinions; you get the opportunity to make connections that will help others achieve their goals; you get to meet new friends who will last a life time and most important you get a chance to change things hopefully for the best.

What about some negatives?

Just never enough time to get everything done. A lot of emails, LOL.

What's a typical day for the President?

First thing is to come to grips that you have professional & personal responsibilities that can’t be ignored. Once you have that notion under control and you allocated the right amount of time for NSHMBA a typical day is reading emails, following up with sponsors, organizing events and trying to keep the chapter going forward on an even keel.

Can you share any funny, moving or upsetting anecdotes that you have encountered as President?

I remember going to this very important client meeting for my company and after the initial introduction as the CEO of ResearchPAYS the senior guy from the client company found out that I was the president of the local chapter for NSHMBA, he chose to only recognize me as the President of NSHMBA and the importance of this role over my corporate responsibilities. PS we got the account; you never know how people feel about what you represent.

What have you learned about being a leader during this process?

That I am a leader who doesn’t need a lot of titles to make people understand their strengths and commitments are what really matters.

What have you learned about Boards?

I had board experience before joining NSHMBA but what my current experience has made clear is the ability of consensus to achieve goals and disarm obstacles.

What have you learned about Jim?

That I should have been involved with NSHMBA many years before 2000; I love to be a part of a team and be able to influence people to contribute whatever they can.

How does this affect/compliment your personal life?

All very positive; your never to experienced or mature to learn something new. My experience with NSHMBA has made me as a whole a better person and leader.

Any words of wisdom for anyone who is undecided about getting more involved?

We as Latinos have come a long way; many other cultural groups that have preceded us have made their mark. We have the opportunity at hand to be a very powerful and influential ethnic group. It is up to us to reach out to those who will follow and provide them with the mentoring and leadership guidance to improve the lot of Hispanic Americans; we can ill afford to let this opportunity escape us. Get involved and leave your mark to improve all of us.

You've heard it said before: First impressions are the most important.

When it comes to the job interview, here's recent proof that proves this point:
A new survey suggests hiring managers often know whether they might hire someone soon after the opening handshake and small talk. Executives were asked, "How long does it typically take you to form either a positive or negative opinion of a job candidate during an initial interview?" The mean response was 10 minutes. Those polled said it takes them just 10 minutes to form an opinion of job seekers, despite meeting with staff-level applicants for 55 minutes and management-level candidates for 86 minutes on average.

This came from a survey developed by Robert Half Finance & Accounting, the largest specialized financial recruitment service, and published April 12, 2007. It included responses from 150 senior executives with Fortune 1,000 companies.

So what does this mean for you as you approach your future job interviews?
Max Messmer, chairman and CEO of Robert Half International, sums it up when he says, “The interview begins the moment job seekers arrive, so applicants need to project enthusiasm and confidence from the start. The opening minutes of the conversation often set the tone for the rest of the discussion, making it wise to prepare especially well for the first few interview questions."

Here's how to make the first 10 minutes of your interview work in your favor:

Know the Four Most Important Questions Pay close attention to the four most important questions employers want answers to when they’re interviewing you:

“Why are you here?”
(Also phrased as “What do you know about us?” or “Why are you here today?”)

“What can you do for us?”
(Also phrased as “Tell me a little about yourself,” “Why are you looking to change jobs?” or "What's your most important accomplishment to date?”)

“Will you fit in?”
(Also phrased as “Will you get along with our values and culture?”)

“What makes you different from everyone else that we may have talked with?”
(Also phrased as, “Will you go that extra mile?” or “Why should we hire you?”)

Rehearse your answers with your own "personal stories." These are short narratives describing specific times in your past when you overcame a crisis, led a team, met a deadline, or resurrected a failed project.

Know the Company Do your homework. Always research the company before you interview. Know who they are, what their major challenges are today and the current "buzz" about them.
Why? The first few minutes of the interview are the time to flatter them.

Remember the question, "Why are you here?" Show them that you've done your research and not only know something about their company, but also have several reasons for being enthusiastic about working for them. Let this enthusiasm carry over into your demeanor as you walk in the door. Know Your RoleFirst impressions count for a lot, especially in the job interview. You're on stage from the minute you enter the room. So play your role by first getting into character:

Remember: The character you play is that of a problem solver, not a job seeker.
As a problem solver, you know why you are here, you're excited about this company, and you know you can help them achieve their goals.

With this kind of ammunition, you can score direct hits on their opening questions and win big points for yourself by demonstrating you are both knowledgeable and excited about their opportunity.

You just don't get it. You've applied to numerous jobs, been to countless interviews and made several new contacts in your network -- yet here you are -- still sitting on the unemployment list. What gives?

Well ... have you ever stopped to consider that what gives might in fact be ... you?

It's a hard concept that most job seekers have trouble wrapping their heads around, but applicants frequently -- inadvertently -- raise red flags to hiring managers that immediately scream, "Don't hire me!" But, it might not be entirely your fault.

"Most companies don't give direct feedback about areas people are weak in while they are employed. They are enabling poor performance and lack of accountability," says Tom Gimbel, president and CEO of The LaSalle Network, an executive recruiting firm in Chicago. "The same mentality exists when people interview. They feel they did 'great' on the interview and never look at themselves for if they feel that the interviewer was looking for something different."

Not sure if you're unknowingly blowing your chances at scoring your dream job? Here are 10 red flags to be wary of during your next job hunt:

Red flag No. 1: You don't have any contact information on your résumé

When you're crafting your résumé, you should focus on highlighting relevant skills and accomplishments that are in line with the position for which you are applying. But what good is an impressive résumé if hiring managers have no way to get in touch with its owner? If they can't find you, they can't hire you. Always provide a home address, phone number or e-mail address so employers can get in touch with you easily.

Red flag No. 2: You have long gaps between jobs on your résumé

Even if your long departure from the work force is valid, extended lapses of unemployment might say to an employer, "Why weren't you wanted by anyone?" Gimbel says. Anytime you have more than a three-month gap of idleness on your résumé, legitimate or otherwise, be prepared to explain yourself.

Red flag No. 3: You aren't prepared for the interview

There are many ways to be unprepared for an interview: You haven't researched the company, you don't have any questions prepared, you didn't bring a copy of your résumé, etc. Plain and simple, do your homework before an interview. Explore the company online, prepare answers to questions and have someone give you a mock interview. The more prepared you are, the more employers will take you seriously.

Red flag No. 4: You didn't provide any references

By omitting references in your application, employers could infer that you don't know anyone who has any positive things to say about you -- when in fact, you just forgot to provide them with people who can vouch for you. No references also shows employers that you aren't prepared for people to call them, Gimbel says. Always make sure the hiring manager has at least one person to contact who can speak on your behalf.

Red flag No. 5: You only have negative things to say about previous employment

We know how tempting it is to want to tell anyone who will listen how much of a (insert expletive word here) your old boss was -- but a hiring manager for a coveted job is not that person.

There are hundreds of ways to turn negative things about an old job into positives. Thought your last job was a dead end? Spin it by saying, "I felt I had gone as far as I could go in that position. I'm looking for something with more opportunity for advancement." Couldn't get along with your co-workers? "I really need to work in an environment where I feel like I'm part of a team and my last position didn't allow for that kind of atmosphere."

Red flag No. 6: You've held seven different jobs -- in the past six months

Job hopping is a new trend in the working world. Workers are no longer staying in a job for 10-20 years; they stay for a couple and move on to the next one. While such a tactic can further your career, switching jobs too often will raise a prospective employer's antenna. Too many jobs in too little time tells employers that either you can't hold a job or you have no loyalty, Gimbel says. Pick and choose the jobs you include on your résumé or prepare to explain yourself.

Red flag No. 7: You give inconsistent answers in your interview

One tactic hiring managers use during the hiring process is to ask you the same question in several different ways. This is mostly to ensure that you're genuine with your answers and not just telling an employer what he or she wants to hear. Keep your responses sincere throughout the entire process and you should be good to go.

Red flag No. 8: You lack flexibility

Most people know what they want in a job as far as benefits, compensation, time-off, etc. If you're unable to be flexible with some of your (unrealistic?) expectations, however, you're going to have a difficult time finding a job. Have a bottom line in terms of what you want before you start the hiring process and be willing to bend a bit if necessary.

Red flag No. 9: Your application was, in a word -- lazy

Only doing the bare minimum of what's asked of you won't get very far -- in life or in your job search. Applying to jobs with the same résumé and the same cover letter (or none at all) is pure laziness. And as Gimbel points out, if you won't spend extra time on yourself and your application materials, you sure as heck won't do it for a client.

Red flag No. 10: You lack objective or ambition

If you have no long-term goals, then you really have no short-term goals either, Gimbel says. "Long-term goals may change, however you need to have some concept of where you want to go." Know where you want to go and how you plan to get there. Otherwise you seem unfocused and unmotivated, which are two big no-no's for an applicant.

In September 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week, which was observed during the
week that included Sept. 15 and Sept. 16. The observance was expanded in 1988 to a monthlong celebration (Sept. 15 -- Oct. 15). America celebrates the culture and traditions of those who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean. Hispanic Business Magazine, regarded as the premier publication for the Hispanic business community, has chosen “The Top 10 Business Schools for Hispanic Students for 2008.” By comparing figures such as: total graduate enrollment vs. Hispanic graduate enrollment, total MBA degrees earned vs. MBA degrees earned to Hispanics, and full-time MBA school faculty vs. full-time MBA school Hispanic faculty, among others, Hispanic Business determined which schools should be worthy of recognition. These schools share more than just the recognition they have achieved. They share a desire and determination to enrich the lives of our Hispanic youth through education; this is why it is not surprising that six out of the top 10 schools cited NSHMBA as one of the major sources in the recruitment of Hispanic talent. Tres artistas Españoles y dos de Chile se reúnen en Jadite Galleries en Nueva York para presentar el mensaje de las Expresiones. La exposición, Expresiones, representa la pasión y el romance en el idioma español traducido en el lienzo, y estos artistas han capturado esos sentimientos en sus obras de arte. Cada artista aporta su propia versión de estas Expresiones, y juntos crean un impresionante collage que es tan móvil como las piezas individuales.

Estos artistas, algunos de los cuales son expositores por primera vez en la escena artística de Nueva York, traen su propia interpretación del lenguaje que comparten. Cada uno de ellos, al igual que sus lenguas, ligeramente diferente, pero todos ellos se derivan de la misma fuente que causa a convertirse en similitudes aparentes, aunque vago en algunos los casos. Keep Your Career Edge Part 1: Never Stop Learning

Every June, a legion of fresh, motivated, talented individuals don mortarboards and gowns to symbolize their ascendancy into the workforce. Indeed, recent college graduates tend to grab many of the employment-related headlines, as reporters and columnists seek to help them on the path to their first full-time jobs.

But what about the vast majority of the workforce? The journeyman professionals and mid-level executives who are discovering some challenges mid-career, whether driven by the economic business cycle, changes in career goals, or the shifting priorities that come with maturity? Just because they are road-tested professionals doesn't mean they have all the answers. With changing workplace and life dynamics, some may need guidance as much as the recent graduates.

Fortunately, taking a cue from those recent graduates, experts agree that there's a solution that can help mitigate economic doldrums, career burnout, and life's curveballs -- continuing education.

Economic Realities
Many economic factors -- including high gas prices, the shrinking dollar, fallout from the subprime crisis, and tight credit markets -- are forcing companies to cut costs and improve efficiencies. Unfortunately, personnel moves, such as layoffs or attrition, are common solutions. The positions most likely to be on the chopping block could be those that carry higher salaries. This practice, however, could prove to be shortsighted.

Gloria Castillo, president of Chicago United, an organization dedicated to fostering sustainable workplace diversity at the executive level, believes that "Retention should be a key goal for companies even in tough times."

She told HispanicBusiness.com that, "It is important for companies to batten down the hatches while also being prepared to aggressively compete . . . to acquire critical talent when the economy turns around."

However, should an institution take a shortsighted view of the economic cycle, how can a mid-career professional help ensure that he or she is indispensable? Ms. Castillo indicates that education and communication are key.

"Employed professionals should be constantly honing their skills and leveraging opportunities within their companies," she said. Additionally, "it is important that they inform their leaders and managers that they are actively engaged in helping the company achieve its goals."

Keith Wyche, president of U.S. operations for Pitney Bowes Management Services and author of the upcoming book "'Good is Not Enough,' and Other Rules for Minority Professionals," agrees. He says that during tough economic times a company will determine what its value in the marketplace is. Then, when making personnel decisions, it will ask, "Who are the people who, based upon performance and results, are best suited to help us to deliver that value to the marketplace?"

"Regardless of what your position is in the organization, there are results or expectations that define whether you are successful or unsuccessful in your role," says Wyche. "Make it a priority to understand what those critical success factors are, and take the time to document them and measure your performance against them on a regular basis."

However, even when taking precautionary steps, a talented professional could end up looking for a new position. All the more reason, says Josh Warborg, President, Pacific Northwest District for Robert Half International, to keep up with one's professional education.

"Staying current makes you competitive in the market," he told us. Specifically, he believes that mid-career professionals should continue to improve their skills.

"Don't be complacent and always continue to take your career seriously," he said. "Welcome more challenges at work as you improve your on-the-job skill set. Earning certifications, like a CPA or CMA, in addition to advanced degrees, can certainly benefit."

Updating your resume on a regular basis is also critical, says Bill Krutzen, Director of HireDiversity.com. Job candidates often only update their resumes when they are out of work and actively looking for a new job. Recalling specific job achievements or new skill sets can be difficult to remember over the past few years. Resumes need to be looked at as living documents that need constant updating.

Ms. Castillo also reminds professionals to "own their professional development programs," by pursuing educational opportunities both within the company and by utilizing external efforts.

Ultimately, bettering your skills will make you more marketable within your own company and more attractive to other companies.

Hispanic MBAs – America needs them!

It is estimated that more than 300 million people around the world speak Spanish. In the US alone, 35 million people speak the language and the country’s Hispanic population is rapidly growing. While English remains the international language of business, there is no doubt that an understanding of the Spanish language is right up there with Mandarin as an important asset to successful commerce. And it isn’t just language – but knowledge and experience of Hispanic cultural intricacies and values that are imperative to understanding Spanish-speaking markets.

With high demand from companies around the world for strategic thinkers with a deep understanding of Hispanic culture, it is surprising that such a small share of business-school applicants are indeed Hispanic. According to GMAC – the council responsible for the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), in the US alone, there was a five per cent decline in Hispanic American test-takers in 2006, from the previous year.

Jose Antonio Cruzado, Director of the QS World MBA Tour Latin American leg, reports that while there may be a decline in Hispanic GMAT test-takers in countries like the US, this doesn’t mean a lack of interest in MBA programs amongst Spanish speakers worldwide. “Our fairs in countries like Chile, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, and Venezuela have oversold this year,” says Jose Antonio. “People know very well that there is an exceptionally high demand among recruiters to hire people immersed in Hispanic culture, particularly when it comes to marketing.”

Jaime Martinez, Associate Director and Admissions Consultant at Finisterra, an MBA admissions consultancy group based in Mexico City, explains, “Latin American students have the skills and command of language and are therefore very valuable to the organizations which they may wish to join in the Spanish market – either in the EU or Latin America.”

Latin American MBAs have a good chance at joining the ranks of commerce teams in the US (if this is their goal), so even if fewer Hispanic Americans are graduating from business school, there will still be a highly qualified group of graduates to cover the booming Hispanic market in the US. And of course, Spanish-speaking MBAs from the US will have excellent opportunities.

The National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) aims to promote business education in the community, and has done well. As a fundamental goal, the organization aims to increase the number of Hispanics on Fortune 500 boards, in addition to promoting leadership of Hispanic professionals. One initiative the NSHMBA has taken is awarding scholarships to high-achieving Hispanics who wish to take on the MBA – a big step forward to increasing the number of Hispanic MBAs available to take on necessary business.

American corporations are also recognizing the gap in Hispanic talent. Companies like Coca Cola, Pfizer, Citibank, and P&G donate money to the scholarship pool, all too well knowing that future revenues and company image depend on this demographic, a demographic that after all makes up 13% of the US population. And for those who have already earned their MBAs – career opportunities are only beginning to multiply.

IBERO-AMERICAN EXPRESSIONS IN MANHATTAN

Three artists from Spain and two from Chile come together in Jadite Galleries in New York City to present the message of Expressions. The exhibition, Expressions, represents the passion and romance in the Spanish language translated unto the canvas, and these artists have captured those feelings in their works of art. Each artist brings its own version of Expressions, and together they create an impressive collage that is just as moving as the individual pieces.

These artists, some of whom are first time exhibitors to the New York art scene, bring their own interpretation of the language they share. Each one, much like their languages, slightly different, but they all stem from the same source causing similarities to become apparent, although vague in cases. Curator Marta Sozzi, and Director Roland Sainz, long time associates bring these Ibero-American gems to New York City for exposure. Marta Sozzi, an artist herself, found the artists and brought them together for Expressions, picking each one individually to maintain the overarching theme and idea.

The New York Chapter of the National Association of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) joins the opening night celebration of Expressions. The organization, with32 chapters in the United States and Puerto Rico, has a diverse mix of members ranging from not only MBA students, but also undergraduates all the way to professionals. The majority of the organization’s members are of Hispanic origin, however, the over 7,000 members come from different ethnic groups. This diversity gives the NSHMBA members an incomparable edge not only in the business world, but in life; which is why NSHMBA New York decided to invite its members to the opening night of Expressions; non-members are welcome for a small fee. The networking event will occur on September 2nd, at Jadite Galleries in midtown, and will include champagne and wine, sponsored by Moët Hennessy USA, Inc., as well as hors d'oeuvres, compliments of Jadite Galleries and NSHMBA New York.
