Hispanic Heritage Month 2008: Hispanic Population

Hispanic Heritage Month 2008: Hispanic Population - September 13, 2008

Hispanic Heritage Month 2008:
Sept. 15 – Oct. 15

In September 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week, which was observed during the
week that included Sept. 15 and Sept. 16. The observance was expanded in 1988 to a monthlong celebration (Sept. 15 -- Oct. 15). America celebrates the culture and traditions of those who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean. Sept. 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively.

NSHMBA In The News
Top 10 Business Schools for Hispanics Name NSHMBA Main Recruiter For Hispanic Talent

Hispanic Business Magazine, regarded as the premier publication for the Hispanic business community, has chosen “The Top 10 Business Schools for Hispanic Students for 2008.” By comparing figures such as: total graduate enrollment vs. Hispanic graduate enrollment, total MBA degrees earned vs. MBA degrees earned to Hispanics, and full-time MBA school faculty vs. full-time MBA school Hispanic faculty, among others, Hispanic Business determined which schools should be worthy of recognition. These schools share more than just the recognition they have achieved. They share a desire and determination to enrich the lives of our Hispanic youth through education; this is why it is not surprising that six out of the top 10 schools cited NSHMBA as one of the major sources in the recruitment of Hispanic talent. These schools are aware of the importance of networking events, recruitment and education assistance by NSHMBA.

In an effort to continue to promote the magnitude of networking events and recruitment, the New York Chapter of NSHMBA will host two career oriented seminars and workshops on September 13. Columbia University’s Business School, ranked at number four in the nation, will be the venue for the New York City pre-conference seminar; which will be presented in partnership with the Latin American & Hispanic Business Association of Columbia Business School. The Rochester pre-conference seminar will be sponsored by Bausch & Lomb and held at their world headquarters in Rochester, New York.

Mainly geared toward students and professionals planning to attend NSHMBA’s national conference in October, the yearly pre-conference seminars will educate participants on skills such as impressing recruiters, interviewing skills, personal branding tools, resume critique, etc. The closing seminar, "Navigating the Career Expo," features panelists representing companies that recruit at the Expo. Participants of the pre-conferences will meet and interact with the panelists in a more personal setting. For more details on the agendas, workshops and to register, visit http://newyork.nshmba.org.

About "In The Heights"
In The Heights is an exhilarating journey into one of Manhattan's most vibrant communities, where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open, and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music.

The New York Times calls In The Heights, "a musical about chasing your dreams and finding your true home… it is basically a salsa-flavored soap opera… the energy it gives off could light up the George Washington Bridge for a year or two…a singular new sensation!”
